Artemis Fowl was one of these films and due to be released in cinemas this year. Disney took the decision to release it on Disney+ so fans didn’t miss out.
Artemis Fowl is a 12-year-old genius descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds. Artemis soon finds himself in a world of fairies and mystical creatures after his father disappears. Artemis kidnaps a Fairy called Holly Short to force out the Fairy and an epic battle rages.
The screenplay is based on Eoin Colfer’s series of novels and Directed by Kenneth Branagh, it stars the likes of Judy Dench in a role that see her like never before.
As a family we like Disney. However, this particular genre of film is a little out of our comfort zone and not really one that we would rush out to the cinema to see. That said, when Artemis Fowl appeared on Disney+ we decided to load up the popcorn and enjoy a different type of film.
At first we were a little in the dark, having never really heard of Artemis Fowl or the books, soon though we were pulled into the fantasy world of fairies and goblins.
Overall we definitely enjoyed the film for what it was, a Disney film! The action was good the storyline was a different take, but enjoyable. The direction was speedy at best and maybe a little rushed, probably due to the age range of expected watchers being fairly low and long films don’t really do well. So there were times of a little confusion of how scenes linked but it didn’t detract from the overall experience. The acting was good but not perfect, Judy Dench was her usual and wonderful best but some of the younger actors seemed a little stilted and we felt a bit forced at times.
The film’s cinematography was however beautiful and fantastic, as you would expect from Disney. The characters are well written and the overall look of the film was very good.
Artemis Fowl is an exciting action-adventure film and I am sure it will divide opinion. People will try to compare it to Harry Potter for example however apart from a little magic, adventure, and some action they are very different films and should be taken in their own capacities. If you are tempted then it’s worth a watch. If we had to give the film a score then we would look in the region of 3 out of 5.
